Walk around Rhiwbach quarry 6.

When the village was alive it had it's own school and a shop. All supplies had to be transported up the mountain to the village, in the end it became too expensive and the village closed.

Each cottage had it's own front garden.

Doorways and windows.

Inside one of the cottages.

Fireplace in the far wall.

Walk around Rhiwbach quarry 5.

Nestled in amongst the waste tips the village did get some shelter
from the elements.

The main track into the village.

Street along the front of the cottages.

Slate fence panels.

Walk around Rhiwbach Quarry 4.

I have returned from a great weekend away.
Taken more pictures but must finish the walk around the quarry.

The stream makes it's way down through the forest, not a lot of water at present.

Looking back along the waste slate level, it's interesting to see nature is slowly reclaiming what's hers and covering up man's scars on the landscape.

Looking across to the mine workers village.

The building off to the right is the toilet block, located by a stream.
Not a pleasant place to visit on a cold winters night!

Walk around Rhiwbach quarry 3.

I shall be away for the weekend so will not be able to post again until Tuesday, I wish you
all a great weekend.

Looking across to the engine house and incline.

The quarry. On the right side of the picture is the old mine entrance.

Close up of the mine entrance, a large grill keeps people like me out!

Another view of the quarry.

Thursday 24 November 2011

Walk around Rhiwbach quarry 2.

From halfway down the incline you can also get a good view of the dressing sheds behind the engine house.

View from the bank at the side of the incline.

The ruins of the engine house.

Looking through to the old engine bed on the upper right of the shot.

Wednesday 23 November 2011

Walk around Rhiwbach quarry.

View across the valley in the early morning sun, very low in the sky at this time of the year.

A closer view of the distant slate dressing sheds.

Walking along the old tramway towards the top of the incline.

Looking down from the top of the incline. Usually slate was transported down inclines, this one is different, slate was brought up the incline. A gravity system was not possible here, at the bottom of the incline was a steam engine which provided the power. There would have been rails on sleepers from top to bottom for the slate wagons to run on.   The small pond to the left of the engine house provided the water for the engine's boiler.
